Here is the 12th album of the elegant bassist Christian McBride, intense moment of pure happiness, surrounded by dream musicians including the excellent vibraphonist Warren Wolf, for this Live at Village Vanguard. Inside Straight is the quintet that launched McBride’s collaboration with Mack Avenue Records (released Kind of Brown in 2009).

As always, under a relatively classic aspect Christian McBride explodes, in his compositions and interpretations, offering at the heart of this album a magnificent tribute to Maya Angelou, whom some called Dr Angelou, author, essayist and American poet whose work focused on the rights civics and died in 2014. Fans of classic jazz will not get lost, and fans of modern jazz will salute the inventiveness and quality of the compositions.
