Once-in-a-generation vocalist Samara Joy<\/strong> has signed with Verve Records<\/strong>, and released “<\/strong>Linger Awhile”<\/strong><\/em>, her full-length debut for the label, on September 16. At just 22 years old, Samara has already garnered critical acclaim for a voice \u201cas rich as custard\u201d (The New York Times<\/strong>) and a delivery that is\u00a0 \u201cdisarming [and] unhurried\u201d (NPR Fresh Air<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Linger Awhile”<\/strong> finds Samara updating beloved songs with a modern twist, sometimes singing original lyrics using the melodies of famous instrumental solos, a style known as vocalese. Recorded at Sear Sound<\/strong> studio in New York City and featuring exemplary musicianship by Pasquale Grasso<\/strong> (guitar), Ben Paterson<\/strong> (piano), David Wong<\/strong> (double bass), and Kenny Washington<\/strong> (drums), the tracklist is comprised of reinvented classics including \u201cSomeone to Watch Over Me\u201d (George Gershwin<\/strong>), \u201c’Round Midnight\u201d (Thelonious Monk<\/strong>), and \u201cNostalgia (The Day I Knew)\u201d (Fats Navarro<\/strong>). “Linger Awhile”<\/strong> not only highlights Samara\u2019s timeless vocals and a musical wisdom beyond her years, it also introduces this foundational popular music to a fresh audience.<\/p>\n
