Sean Mason is a pianist, composer, producer and bandleader from Charlotte, North Carolina, whose music draws on the full history of jazz as a living language. His work encompasses traditional and modern jazz, church and conservatory training, dance halls and concert stages, accompaniment and leadership. Across those settings, Mason combines historical knowledge, melodic clarity, rhythmic vitality, and a strong sense of purpose: modern music strongly tethered to jazz history yet not beholden to it.

That vision runs through Mason’s principal recordings as a bandleader and composer. The Southern Suite examines his relationship to the American South, asking how a person can remain rooted in a culture while questioning traditions that restrict change or individual freedom. A Breath of Fresh Air emerged from a period of healing, space and renewed possibility and inaugurated Taylor Christian Records, the label Mason founded. On State of the Art, he returns to the piano trio and explores what becomes possible when musicians and movement artists accept the risk, responsibility and unpredictability of creating together in real time.

Mason’s leader albums have earned substantial critical acclaim alongside strong radio, chart, streaming and international response. His 2024 duo album with vocalist Catherine Russell, My Ideal, received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album and a 2025 Bistro Award for Outstanding Recording. He shared a 2023 Bessie Award with Charles Turner for the music and sound design of choreographer LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum. Mason became a Steinway Artist in 2024 and was selected for NPR’s inaugural Jazz Night in America Youngbloods class in 2022. His work has also received support from Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works program, a South Arts Jazz Road Tours grant and an Arts & Science Council Creative Renewal Fellowship.

Wynton Marsalis has praised Mason’s “combination of soul and intelligence”; Branford Marsalis has said, “Sean can really play”; NPR has called his music “exceptionally groovy”; and DownBeat has cited his “penchant for elegant melodicism.” As a leader, Mason has appeared at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Bimhuis and Blue Note Milano.
